π 14 Firefighters Hurt in a Fast-Moving 4-Alarm Fire Near Astoria

Fourteen firefighters were injured β one seriously β battling a massive 4-alarm fire in East Elmhurst on Sunday, in one of the most intense FDNY responses to hit the western Queens area this year.
The blaze broke out along Astoria Boulevard and spread fast enough that firefighters had to abandon their positions and escape from the second floor via portable ladders deployed by the Firefighter Assist Search Team. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said the fire "turned very quickly and became a very serious situation," with members having "very little time to think about it" when it came time to get out. The fourth alarm brought a total of 74 units and 231 firefighters and EMS personnel to the scene.
East Elmhurst is a short drive from Astoria, and this was no routine house fire β 14 firefighters treated, one seriously, is a number that warrants attention. Full details on how it started and the status of the injured are still developing.

ποΈ Mamdani Wants to Build 12,000 Homes Right Over the Sunnyside Yard β and Your Neighbors Have Opinions

Nearly 200 western Queens residents showed up to a community information session last month on one of the most ambitious β and long-dormant β development proposals in New York City history. The Sunnyside Yard is back on the table, and the debate is just getting started.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani revived the plan in February, proposing to deck over the massive Amtrak rail yard that sits between Sunnyside and Long Island City and build 12,000 new homes on top of it β half of them under the Mitchell-Lama affordable housing program β alongside parks, child care centers, and new infrastructure. Mamdani has called it the largest single housing development in New York City since 1973. He's even floated the idea of a federal partnership to help fund the estimated $21 billion cost of decking over the yard.
The community session gave residents their first real chance to weigh in, and the results were mixed. Roughly 32% said they support the project, 26% oppose it, and the remaining third said they need more information before deciding. Council Member Julie Won, whose district sits directly alongside the yard, has been vocal about how much work still lies ahead β the plan currently has no stormwater management plan, no school siting, no refined cost estimates, and no timeline. If you live anywhere near Sunnyside, LIC, or Woodside, this project is going to be part of the conversation for years.

π¬ Your Block, Their Film Set: Astoria and the "Content" Problem

A new piece in the Queens Ledger captures something that every Astoria resident has experienced but rarely sees written down: the weird, persistent reality of living in a neighborhood that keeps getting turned into a film set.
The "Astoria Street Spectator" column makes the point that most of what's shooting on your block isn't a movie β it's a commercial, a TikTok campaign, a TV spot, or something else you'll scroll past without recognizing. What used to be "film" is now "content," and the economics have shifted: costs are rising, AI is replacing parts of the pipeline, and crews are getting smaller. The PAs blocking your driveway are often young workers from the same working-class communities that Astoria itself is made of.
Astoria has been a production hub since the 1920s β Kaufman Studios, Wildflower, Borden Studios, and now a constant stream of smaller shoots all use the neighborhood as backdrop and base. The column doesn't tell you whether to love or hate it, but it asks a fair question: who actually benefits when Hollywood decides your block looks like a good set?
π€ Q.E.D. Astoria Turned One β With a Comedy Show for a Cause

Q.E.D. Astoria celebrated the one-year anniversary of its resident series, Heckling Hand: Comedy for a Cause, this past Saturday β and if you missed it, here's why it matters.
The monthly show has been running since May 2025 with a simple formula: bring in good comics, highlight a worthy cause, and send the audience home laughing and a little more informed. The anniversary edition featured a raffle with prizes from local businesses including Toodles & French, Rivercrest, Space Salon, and The Row Astoria β the kind of neighborhood crossover that's become Q.E.D.'s signature move.
Q.E.D. itself has had a big year under its current ownership. New owner Rebecca Shore took over the beloved Astoria comedy club in 2025 and has leaned hard into its identity as a community space, not just a venue. The club is ranked #1 in NYC by Time Out, runs shows almost every night, and has become one of the main reasons people point to Astoria when they talk about where culture is actually happening in Queens.
